Vector NTI is available to Emory Researchers

IMPORTANT (Updated 03.05.04) : Before you purchase a Vector NTI dynamic license seat please consider the following: While the cost of a dynamically licensed copy of NTI is significantly cheaper than a personal/statically licensed copy , you will be participating in a shared license pool of 5 concurrent users for each module (NTI, AlignX, ContigExpress, BioPlot). This means that it is possible that during peak business hours you might be denied ,for example, a Vector NTI seat due to the fact that other users are occupying all available licenses for that module

The busiest times are weekdays between the hours 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Seats for all modules are usually easily had outside of these peak hours. While it is not often that seat saturation occurs please be aware that on occasion it does. So if you definitely need to be guaranteed access to NTI modules on any given day ,at any time, day or night then please consider the purchase of a statically licensed copy of NTI (albeit at a much higher price).

Are you and Emory researcher located at the VA hospital ? Please read !!

DLS users must also have an active static IP# relative to the Emory network. While this is typically not a problem for on campus users , it can be a problem for users located at the Veteran's Hospital since there are different network policies in place. VA users can secure an "Emory VLAN" address though the computer must be active on the Emory network during any and all NTI sessions. That is , VA users cannot be part of the VA network and Emory network simultaneously which might present a problem for users needing access to resources on both networks. Therefore its STRONGLY RECOMMENDED for VA based Emory researchers to secure a static NTI license which will avoid the problems associated with remote network access

There are 4 modules available with the NTI package: NTI, ContigExpress, BioPlot, and AlignX. Each of these modules has 5 concurrent licenses available which means that , for example, even if all licenses for NTI are occupied then you could still use the ContigExpress module as long as there are free licenses for it. So if your interest in the product is primarily sequence assembly then you probably won't encounter problems with obtaining licenses since that particular module isn't used as frequently as the core module, NTI, which is the most popular.

If you are an Emory researcher and have questions about the DLS vs. Static licensing model then please direct questions to Steve Pittard.

How much does the license for NTI cost ? For exact pricing information please contact David Michaels (240-379-4109) at Invitrogen.

How does a DLS (dynamic license seat) differ from a personal or "static" copy ? A "statically licensed" copy of NTI allows you to use the software on a single computer at any time, anywhere. A "dynamically licensed" copy of NTI requires you to use NTI on single computer that is attached to the Emory network since it will need to access a license server. DLS users participate in a 5 concurrent user model which means you get the software at a discount because you are sharing a number of concurrent use seats with other NTI users. A personal / static copy of NTI can be used at any time without the need for network attachment though the pricing is higher. Laptop users who frequently travel outside of the Emory campus network should consider purchasing a personal/static copy.

What are the requirements to run a DLS version of NTI ? See the system requirements section for details on hardware. You must also be on the general Emory network with a static IP assignment. Static IP assignments can be secured from your local comptuting support staff. Please make sure that you obtain a static assignment. The most frequent problem associated with NTI / DLS use is that users provide dynamic numbers ,thinking them to be static, which causes authentication to break when the dynamic IP# changes.

Is the purchase price for NTI a one time cost ?. The cost of the software is a one time purchase however users are responsible for yearly maintenance which is payable to Informax. Users are also responsible for paying the cost of upgrading if it is a for cost upgrade. BIMCORE does not handle accouting procedures for NTI purchases and maintenance. BIMCORE *does* handle the administration of the local DLS server. So please direct "money" questions to David Michaels at Informax.

Can I upgrade to the latest version of NTI for free ?. Upgrades are typically only available top users who are paying yearly maintenance. You should contact David Michaels to discuss the costs of upgrading your exsiting version of Vector NTI.

Can I install a single copy of NTI onto multiple machines ?. No. NTI licenses are purchased on a per machine basis. If you wish to use NTI on multiple machines in your lab then you must purchase multiple licenses (one for each intended machine).

I want to buy a DLS copy of NTI. How do I proceed ? Contact David Michaels at Informax to make arrangements for a purchase. After the purchase is complete Informax will contact BIMCORE to inform us of the new purchase. Please refer to the downloads page for information on how to aquire a copy of the software. Also please request a static IP assignment from your local comptuting support staff. Please send this to Steve Pittard. Please understand that we need to receive confirmation of the purchase directly from Informax before we can setup access to our DLS server

If you have purchased Vector NTI through the Site License and you are current on your maintenance then you are entitled to technical support from Vector NTI. (Note: this is for site license customers ONLY. If you have a personal copy you must purchase a support contract directly from Informax, Inc. ) Existing Emory DLS users technical support can be obtained by contacting NTI tech support:

Vector NTI

The core product, Vector NTI Advance , contains a comprehensive set of data analysis and management tools, implemented across several application modules. All the modules share an information-rich graphical user interface that makes sequence analysis both simple and intuitive. graphics and sequence analysis. An abbreviated list of capabilties include primer design, mapping, virtual gel, homology searches, web based sequence analysis and the list goes on. The program will even design cloning strategies and generate protocols for your research.

AlignX is a multiple sequence alignment program that includes graphical displays, editable text, and a phylogenetic tree with the analysis of four or more sequences.

BioPlot is a DNA and protein analysis program with graphical biochemical and biophysical analyses. The images can even be superimposed and exported to other programs.

ContigExpress is for contiguous assembly. It allows you to import chromatograms (as well as text sequences), it offers the ability to maintain a separate database for your contig assembly projects, and it keeps a hierarchy of projects.

For more information, visit the Informax web page. If you have purchased a copy/upgrade of Vector NTI please refer to the installation instructions for further information.
