| Lasergene: Determining Network Settings |
|
There are several versions of windows and the
procedure for determing network settings is a bit different for each.
There are also two major releases of Apple operating system software
OS 9 (aka "classic") and OS X ( ten ). Please consult the relevant
section to determine if you currently have (or not) a static IP
assignment. For Windows 2000 you can highlight the desktop icon named " My Network Places" , right click it and select "properties". A Window will appear from which you should select "Local Area Connection". A status box will appear and you should select the "properties" button. A box resembling the following should appear:
Highlight the item which says "Internet Protocol" and then click the "Properties" button. You should see a box resembling the following:
In the example above ,the computer is being given a static assignment of 170.140.48.212. So this would be a suitable setup for use with Lasergene. Were it the case that Obtain an IP address automatically was selected then that would mean that a dynamic/DHCP address was in use and you would need to request a static assignment from your local computing administrator. If you get a permission error or you cannot press the properties button then it is most likely the case that you are not logged in as administrator. So you would need to locate your local computing support person to determine for you whether or not you have a static IP assignment. From the Start item proceed to settings -> control panel. A window will appear from which you should select Network. Double click the Network icon and you should see a box resembling the following:
At this point press the Properties button and you should see information such as:

For Apple systems running system 9 please select the apple menu item located in the upper left corner of the screen and scroll over to control panels and then scroll down to TCP/IP. You should see an box resembling the following:
In the above example note that the Mac is configured to obtain its address manually which implies a static connection. This is a good thing. However Were it to say Using DHCP Server then you would have to obtain a static IP number from your local computing administrator. To determine the network settings in an Apple computer running OS X, Go to the appleSystem Preferences and select the network button:
After doing this you will see a box resembling the following:
