How do I get access to GeneSpring and SpotFire ?
BIMCORE has created a new MicroArray subscription in addition to the existing services - Sequence Analysis and Molecular Modelling. By becoming a MicroArray subscriber you will have access to GeneSpring from your lab and Spotfire (using machines in BimCore's space ). To view rates for this service and/or sign up please proceed to our subscription page We will also need the name and email address of all potential users in your lab so they will be able to use the signup calendar.
What are the requirements for using the software ?
Regardless of what platform you choose you will need to supply us with a computer with a statically assigned IP address. This is required to insure smooth delivery of service to subscribers and to enforce the licensing agreement we have in place with Silicon Genetics. This also lets us track use and make intelligent determinations about when to upgrade the number of seats. Static IP numbers can be obtained from your local computing support person. If you wish to determine if a current given computer has a static address (or not) then refer to this document for assistance. The document makes reference to Lasergene though the procedures to listed to determine network settings still apply in the case of GeneSpring
While GeneSpring will run under Windows and Apple environments we strongly recommend that you use the Windows platform because of Java
performance issues and Mac OS. If you must use GeneSpring on the Apple
platform then please use Mac OS X - you will experience poor performance
should you choose to implement Genespring on a Mac with OS 9 or earlier.
In any case GeneSpring is a demanding program in terms of computing resoruces
so the requirements listed below are the minimum.
| PC / Windows | Mac Version |
| Windows XP/2000/NT/98 | Mac OS X (v10.2.1), OS 9.2,9.1 |
| Pentium III or better | |
| 512 MB RAM | 512 MB RAM |
| 1024 X 768 Display | 1024 x 768 Display |
| 250 MB of free disk space | 250 MB of free disk space |
Can I demo the software before I subscribe ?
You can demo the software at any time by downloading a fully functional, time limited version from the vendor's site. Load up www.silicongenetics.com if the link is broken.
Why do I need to use the signup calendar ?
Since we have only a two concurrent use agreement we must carefully manage access to the two "seats". By using the calendar you 1) get the password which activates the software and 2) indicate the times at which you will be using the software so other GeneSprng users can plan around you. In this fashion we can reduce the number of "collisions" or times when both seats are occupied. Please consider Genespring to be a shared resource. When you have concluded work please remember to exit the program. If you leave it running it will occupy a seat which locks out other users.
Why do I see "Failed to make reservation" when signing up for time on the calendar ?
This is not a serious problem though it does mean that we do not have a record of you in our microarray subscriber database. We license the PI and any users in his or her lab whose names and email addresses he/she has submtted. Therefore it is important that we get a list of names and email addresses of all potential users from your lab.
Its also possible that you cannot make a reservation because you have special "popup killer" software in place. The calendar uses a "popup" to make the reservation so if you are using "popup killers". then please put the signup page on your exception list.
When I try to launch GeneSpring it says there are no more licenses available. Why ?
This indicates that both licenses are in use. Check the calendar to see who is using the seats and when they will be done. If you have signed up for time and you cannot get a seat then please contact us at 727-3501 or 727-0038 and hoepfully we can determine who is using the seats and why they have not released them. Keep in mind that the signup calendar requires that users enter email and PI name so you should be able to view the contact information.
