You must apply for this position through the Fellowships in Research and Science Teaching (FIRST) website. The Biomolecular Computing Resource (BimCore) at Emory University School of Medicine is a subscription-based computing support service for Emory researchers. BimCore provides computational resources, training, and on-call support for various Bioinformatics software (sequence analysis, genomics) and Biomolecular Modeling software (display, modeling, mutagenesis, docking) and Highthroughput Statistical Analysis (microarray and gene expression). (http://www.bimcore.emory.edu) The Fellowships in Research and Science Teaching (FIRST) is a successful program that provides postdoctoral fellows with both research support and training in teaching. This fellowship program combines the faculties of one of the top national research universities for interdisciplinary biomedical research training and four of the top national minority servicing institutions in the Atlanta metropolitan area for opportunities in education training and teaching. (http://www.physiology.emory.edu/FIRST/) BimCore is currently seeking a postdoc fellow in the area of Bioinformatics and microarray analysis. This position will have a major research and education component. RESEARCH Fellow will be involved in all steps of gene expression analysis: data file management, quality control, statistical analysis, clustering, visualization, annotation and interpretation, as well as, experimental design, grant preparation and publication. Research projects available range from basic research to ongoing clinical studies ( transformed versus metastatic cancer cell lines, resistant versus non-resistant cell lines to viral infection, role of specific G proteins in apoptosis, cellular effect of surgery, classification of cancer, etc.). Fellow will either provide collaboration and consulting support to project PI or research staff for analyzing, manipulating, visualizing and/or interpreting data in individual research projects, or will provide training and educational support to staff for their own analysis. EDUCATION Fellow will develop and conduct an educational program and workshops in the proper use of microarray analysis software and related bioinformatics resources and databases. Fellow will develop and maintain an educational web site to promote and support the use of microarray analysis techniques, protocols and related resources. Such web-based tutorials and guides will be the basis of the classes and workshops offered by BimCore. Fellow will maintain a current awareness of newly developed databases and resources and develop innovative approaches to disseminating this information. Fellow will host user groups, sponsored seminars and company based workshops. Fellow will offer classes and workshops at Emory and local AUC schools. Direct relationship will be established with teachers of bioinformatics or statistics at AUC schools. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE Applicants should have a PhD degree, with work experience in biological sciences and bioinformatics, as well as an interest in gene expression. Knowledge of widely-known bioinformatics resources and tools like Blast, Entrez, SRS, Ensembl, and R or Bioconductor is desired. Previous knowledge of microarray data analysis and commercially available analysis tools (GeneSpring, Spotfire, GeneTraffic, Bioconductor, etc...) is highly beneficial. Very good communication skills and the ability to work on his/her own initiative as well as being able to work in a team are necessary. Must be a highly motivated team player and demonstrate initiative and creativity. Some teaching experience preferred. This position would be ideal for a molecular biologist with computer skills and aptitude to apply microarray skills within a growing research and services bioinformatics team. FUNDING This position will be funded by the FIRST program (Fellowships in Research and Science Teaching). Applicant must be eligible for and accepted into the FIRST program (http://www.physiology.emory.edu/FIRST/). |
